A memorandum of partnership signed by the Ministry of Education and the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center

On Monday, August 16, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center signed a memorandum of partnership. The parties agreed to cooperate in the field of education and science. One of the first joint steps will be the National Memory Lesson dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy for students of Ukrainian schools in September. A number of other educational activities are also provided.

The document was signed at the Ministry of education and science by the Minister of Education and Science Serhiy Shkarlet and the CEO at BABYN YAR Holocaust Memorial Center Max Yakover.

"The Holocaust is one of the most tragic events not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also in the history of Ukraine and Europe. It is our common pain that we have endured together, and we must work together to avoid repeating the bitter mistakes of the past. Therefore, the team of the Ministry of Education and Science will contribute to joint informational and educational events, memory lessons, and scientific research. Our future is a peaceful and happy country, welcoming to all peoples of the world," said the Minister Serhiy Shkarlet.

«Together with the Ministry of Education and Science, we will soon propose a completely new approach to studying the history of the Holocaust, – said the the CEO at BABYN YAR Holocaust Memorial Center Max Yakover. – Along with the study of textbook materials, students will be able to try themselves as researchers, to learn new things in practice by working with primary sources. To this end, we will introduce an educational online platform where students can add finds from home archives and artifacts digitized in local museums, memories of relatives about World War II. We will also launch interactive audio tours in Babyn Yar this fall. On September 29, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy, we will hold a National Memory Lesson».

In particular, the Memorandum stipulates that the Ministry of Education and the Memorial Center jointly:

on September 29, will hold a National Memory Lesson dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy for school students. In the future, such lessons will be held annually;

organize educational, scientific and cultural competitions for teachers, professors and students, establish nominations, awards, etc.;

prepare joint publications of specialized educational materials and create joint publishing projects;

exchange information on the study of the Holocaust with the Memorial Center, universities and research institutions.

According to the document, such cooperation will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about the tragic events of the Holocaust in Ukraine and Europe, the implementation of modern methods for practical work by using the latest educational tools for scientists, the development of project activities among teachers, schoolchildren and students, and facilitate analyzing the processes taking place in society.

As a reminder: a working group under the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, consisting of leading teachers and methodologists from 10 regions of the country, approved methodological materials for work with the online platform "Red Spot of Memory". The platform is dedicated to the study of the history of World War II and the Holocaust. Already in September, it will be presented to the general public by the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center.
