I quickly went down to see what was going on. All the drivers were alright, thank God. I decided that the best way out of the situation was to put the gun into its combat position and tow it out. As we were figuring it out, some captain came running, cursing us out. Between all the curse words, I heard some familiar phrases. He told us that we did not know how to use a road, and he would teach us. He kept on cursing and told us that we’d pay for this. It was a tense situation. I noticed that the loaders of my gun had taken out their carbines and

As for the trip there, there was even an incident when a heavy bomb hit the road and stopped all traffic completely. Trucks towing guns would descend, but then got stuck. They had to be pushed out. It so happened that the commander of the battery and the gun commander went ahead, but I was not permitted to leave the gun. The gun . . . when it descended the driver was a sorry sight, he was a ball of nerves. He held the levers in a vice grip and descended. When he began to drive up, there was a terrible noise, the hitch between the gun and the towing vehicle broke, it slid down, and hit the tractor.
