The Series of Installations “Glance into the Past”

“Glance into the Past” is a memorial object unveiled on January 27, 2021, to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was created by Ukrainian artist and architect Anna Kamyshan under the initiative of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center.

The installation is located on Beresteiskyi Avenue and consists of two stone boulders with built-in monoculars. Through these monoculars, visitors can view archival photographs of Babyn Yar taken in the fall of 1941 by German photographer Johannes Hahle. The central element is a tree with broken branches, symbolizing interrupted lives and a severed connection to lineage and history.

The Kurenivka tragedy

"Glance into the Past" is an installation unveiled in March 2021 by the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center to mark the 60th anniversary of the Kurenivka tragedy. The project was created by Oleh Shovenko.

The monument is located at the site of the dam breach on March 13, 1961, when a mudslide flooded the residential districts of Kureniivka. The installation is a brick magnified tenfold, incorporating samples from different historical periods. These include a brick dated 1843, bricks from the factory where Mendel Beilis worked, and unique bricks imprinted with children's handprints instead of standard stamps.

The surge in construction in Kyiv after World War II significantly increased the demand for bricks, leading to the accumulation of industrial waste dumped into Babyn Yar.

600 ml of water was required to produce a single brick. At the top of the monument is an aquarium containing 600 liters of slurry – the amount needed to produce all the bricks forming the installation's foundation.
