The Symbolic Synagogue "A Place for Reflection"

The Symbolic Synagogue "Place for Reflection" is a unique architectural and memorial object created by the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center in 2021, designed by Swiss architect Manuel Herz. Ukrainian mechanics, engineers, and artists contributed to its realization.

The synagogue is shaped like a book that opens and closes using special mechanisms, embodying the idea of unveiling history and memory. Its height reaches 11 meters and was created using centuries-old oak wood collected from old buildings throughout Ukraine. Its interior design replicates the traditional decorations of Western Ukrainian synagogues, particularly those in Khodoriv and Hvizdets, which were destroyed during World War II. The ceiling features a starry sky depicting the arrangement of stars on September 29, 1941 – the day the mass shootings at Babyn Yar began.

In 2021, the synagogue gained international recognition, being shortlisted for the prestigious award by the influential architecture and design magazine Dezeen.
